There are times when work and life seem like mutually-exclusive, diametrically opposed concepts. It happens, even to the best of people in the best of situations.
Frederick County’s Office of Economic Development, Workforce Services and Chamber of Commerce along with the City of Frederick’s Department of Economic Development recently honored five companies that strive to maintain that illusive work-life balance as the most “Family Friendly” in the area.
Frederick Memorial Healthcare System is proud to be included as one of these top five Family Friendly places to work in Frederick County.

As an FMH employee looking at the list, I can tell you we have most of those employee benefits! The hospital has an entire department devoted to professional development (and it’s not just for clinical staff); we’re involved with the community through health fairs, educational events, and just this past Spring we hosted our first radiothon with Key 103.1 and 106.9 the Eagle to raise funds for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. Employees have access to the hospital’s health insurance program, dental and vision options, and (since we’re not-for-profit) a 403(b) program.
While employees are not reimbursed for gym memberships, we do receive a discount on any exercise classes held at the FMH Wellness Center (yoga, pilates, etc.) and our Cardiac Rehabilitation (PDF) gym is available to employees free of charge during times when patients are not using it. Just last year the hospital started a bowling league — which has become quite competitive! As you might imagine in a healthcare facility, employees receive free immunizations as needed.
On top of all of those great benefits, we have a great Employee Wellness Program. We attend informative sessions (usually around lunchtime), keep track of our workouts and routine visits to doctors to earn points. The employees who earn 50 points get a discount on their health insurance premiums! New this year, one of the employees who earns the discount will actually receive a full year of health insurance for free! I know I’d like to win that drawing!
In an article in the current 270 inc., the author concludes given the choice between a family friendly company and one that isn’t so accommodating — “there really is no contest”, noting
Employees covet positions at these companies. Family-friendly companies encourage camaraderie, personal growth, a stronger sense of self-worth and an overall feeling of having contributed to the organization, making the work experience far more rewarding.
As an employee, I’d have to agree.
