On the physical side of things, FMH is the first facility in the region to use the Hologic Selenia Dimensions 2D Full-Field Digital Mammography unit.
This new unit allows for a faster mammogram with more comfortable compression. As an added benefit, the equipment has a flexible platform that can be configured for 3D breast imaging when and if breast tomosynthesis gains the approval of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). These studies collect multiple views using an arc motion, which can cut down on the number of secondary images requested.
FMH mammography locations throughout Frederick County are also certified “Softer Mammogram Providers” using the MammoPad. About 70% of women say using this soft foam cushion (designed by a breast surgeon and approved by the FDA) cut their discomfort during a mammogram in half.
