Do the pink ribbons everywhere lead to any action on your part? Or is it more like ‘oh, it’s breast cancer awareness month again, that’s nice. I hope someone finds a cure someday’?
I want to encourage you to take action today. Do a self breast exam. Schedule your mammogram appointment if you’re over 40. Open up a reputible medical information site like WebMD, the CDC, or the Mayo Clinic and read something about breast cancer.
Want to do more? Great! FMH is part of a whole host of events this month — pick one (or more)!
Breast Cancer Awareness Month Radiothon: Friday, October 8th, radio stations Key 103 and 106.9 the Eagle will be broadcasting live from FMH Crestwood and asking for your support. Visit either station’s website to make your online donation. We’ll also have a “pink bucket brigade” downtown from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm accepting donations from passers-by. The money raised will benefit the FMH Hurwitz Breast Cancer Fund.
Pink Ribbon 5K: Saturday, October 9th we’ll be up and out at the Baker Park Band Shell at 8:00 am to start the second-annual Pink Ribbon 5K. Come out to run, walk, or cheer for our participants! Again, all of the money raised goes to the FMH Hurwitz Breast Cancer Fund.
Pink Ribbon Gala: Saturday, October 16th Colonial Jewelers will host the 11th-annual Pink Ribbon Gala. This year’s festivities feature a silent auction of fine jewelry, cocktains and hours d’oeuvres as usual, but this year it’s also a Masquerade Gala! Ball gowns and masks are desired, but optional. As with the previous two events, all funds raised will support the FMH Hurwitz Breast Cancer Fund.
FMH Breast Cancer Symposium: Wednesday, October 20th we’ll welcome members of the community to FMH Crestwood for our sixth-annual Breast Cancer Symposium (PDF). The event begins at 5:00 pm with tours of the facility, followed by presentations on triple negative breast cancer, nutrition, exercise and spirituality as they relate to a cancer diagnosis and we’ll hear from the group Survivors Offering Support. Please see the PDF link above for RSVP information.
FMH Crestwood Open House: Friday, October 22nd we’ll throw open the (automatic) doors at FMH Crestwood for tours, cut the official ribbon and have our employees available to answer your questions about the services available at our newest facility. Stop by for some heavy hors d’oeuvres and be sure to check out the artwork in our gallery — artists will be on hand to discuss their work as well!
One last reminder (and call to action): right now there are 2.5 million breast cancer survivors living in the United States. Many of them caught their cancers early thanks to screening mammograms. I’ve said it before — getting your mammogram might not be something you eagerly look forward to, but it’s an important step toward catching any issues early. See your primary care physician, get your order and call 240-566-3400 to schedule your appointment.
