We want to offer our special thanks to the FMH Auxiliary for caring enough to make a difference for FMH and our community. Thank you for not only volunteering your time and talents but for your unwavering financial support of the hospital. As the number one annual supporter of the hospital, the FMH Auxiliary plays a vital role helping FMH meet the healthcare needs of our community.
On September 11, 1952, the Women’s Auxiliary of Frederick Memorial Hospital was founded. Service to the hospital began immediately with the first volunteers helping out in the Record Room and quickly expanding to other departments. By 1955, the FMH Auxiliary was the largest women’s organization in Frederick
Formerly known as Candy Stripers, Junior Volunteers, joined the organization’s ranks in 1967. When men joined the group in the early 1970’s, and teenage boys began to volunteer in 1971, the name was officially changed to the Frederick Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.
Originally founded to “serve on committees, support fundraising activities and promote good will,” the FMH Auxiliary’s first fundraiser was the Snow Ball held on December 22, 1952. The event raised $1,131.50, which was used to air-condition the operating room. Since then, the Auxiliary has donated more than $6 million to the hospital for equipment and improvements, and has contributed millions of hours of service to the Frederick community.
Today, the Auxiliary is composed of more than 800 women and men who continue the tradition of service and stewardship. In fiscal year 2010, members of the auxiliary provided 82,279.50 hours of their time to guide our visitors, transport our patients, and support the family members of those who are ill, injured, or on the mend. Using the published hourly value of volunteer work performed for Maryland of $21.83 per hour, the dollar value to FMH by volunteers was $1,796,181.
In Fiscal Year 2010 the FMH Auxiliary contributed close to $248,657 to help support the FMH Auxiliary Prenatal Center, scholarships for Nursing and High School Seniors, and Valet Parking. FMH also is most grateful to the Auxiliary for its recent pledge of $100,000 to support the new Women’s Center at FMH Crestwood.
