Last fall, Ed Mayne went to Mt. Airy Health Services for physical therapy after knee surgery. Less than six months later, he was back—this time to rehab his shoulder following a torn rotator cuff injury. “When I told the PTs last December I’d be back to say ‘hi,’” says the Frederick High School Agriculture teacher, “this isn’t quite what I had in mind!”
Since April, Mayne has visited his physical therapy team an average of three times per week. His 60-90 minute sessions use a wide variety of therapies, equipment and exercises to increase his shoulder’s strength, balance, range of motion and muscular control.
“The tendons in the rotator cuff are fragile,” explains Nikki Delisio, DPT. “We start slowly with passive therapies, and then gradually build up to more active exercises as the patient gains strength and endurance.”
“They really take a ‘team’ approach here,” says Mayne. “And it’s been perfect for me. I have made excellent progress. I’m very pleased.”
In addition to Mt. Airy Health Services, outpatient rehabilitation is available at FMH Rose Hill and FMH Crestwood. Services vary by location, but include Occupational Therapy Services, Speech Therapy, Aquatics, Lymphedema & Fibromyalgia Management, Gait Training, Low Vision, Fall Prevention and a wide range of Women’s Health Rehabilitation Services.
FMH Home Care Rehabilitation: Care that Comes to You!
When a patient is advised to continue with physical or occupational therapy after discharge from a hospital or
rehab facility, but can’t leave home for treatment, FMH Home Care Rehabilitation is the answer. “Before a patient goes home from the hospital or another type of facility, we meet with them, the family, the physician and their care team,” said Jane Kinney, R.N., Community Services Liaison for FMH Home Health Services. “We also visit the home to evaluate the safety of the environment. Then, we use everything we’ve learned to create a plan of care, set goals and assist patients to achieve maximum independence as quickly and safely as possible.
Former patient Bill Ruble said FMH Home Care Services were invaluable to him following his knee replacement earlier this year “I got excellent care from the FMH physical therapists after my surgery,” said Mr. Ruble. “I healed very quickly, and was actually back to work in less than six weeks.”
“Patients who participate in physical therapy do better in the long run than those who don’t,” said Program Director, Daniele Serro. “Getting skilled care in your home following a surgery or injury is often covered under Medicare. My recommendation is that people put that benefit to work for them.”
