Meet Leaky Leona (yes, we named her).
She could be a super-mom, a corporate-board-meeting-force-to-contend-with, a marathon-running-master-chef — heck, all of the above! She’s completely put together, that woman you want to be (and/or loathe) — with an embarrassing problem she’d blush to mention to anyone but her closest female friends.
Urinary incontinence is the inability to control the release of urine from your bladder, and it’s more common than you might think.
The severity of urinary incontinence can range from occasionally leaking when you cough or sneeze (or laugh) to having an urge to “go” that’s sudden and strong.
There are many different types of urinary incontinence, such as stress incontinence, urge incontinence, and mixed incontinence. The causes are also varied because urinary incontinence isn’t a disease, it’s a symptom of an underlying medical condition, a physical problem, or side effect of a medication, pregnancy, or childbirth. It can also be caused by a lifestyle choice, such as caffeine or alcohol.
The best news? Incontinence isn’t something you have to live with.
Most cases of incontinence can be eliminated or controlled, especially when treatment begins early. If urinary incontinence is affects your daily activities, please schedule a visit with your doctor. In most cases, medical treatment, physical therapy, and simple lifestyle changes can help to ease the discomfort or even stop urinary incontinence.
