Sticking with an exercise plan isn’t easy. If it was, we’d all be at our (illusive) goal weights and no one would think anything of it.
Staying active and fit takes dedication, perseverance and the willingness to get up and go when sitting back and relaxing sounds much more attractive. With that in mind, we thought it was high time to celebrate some truly committed participants in the FMH Medical Fitness program.
50 members of the program, which provides medical monitoring for people who want to exercise but who have concerns about their health, celebrated a decade or more of consistent exercise. That’s more than 500 years of stick-to-it-iveness, 500 years of putting the excuses aside and coming in to work out.
Wednesday, May 30th the program coordinators invited all 50 members to come together and celebrate this impressive accomplishment at the place they’ve come to know and love – the gym.
Each participant with 10 or more years in the program received a certificate and a lanyard reading “You’re A Star!”.
Others said the time at the gym provided emotional support along with the physical fitness benefits.
“It’s a brotherhood and a sisterhood,” one man said. “We have a camaraderie here, we’re sharing the good stuff and commiserating about the other stuff.”
Fred Hochhauser agrees, it’s more than a gym.
While we’re celebrating this milestone for our participants, we’re also looking ahead to the next step in the growth of the program. After starting at the Frederick YMCA back in 1998 and moving to the Frederick Indoor Sports Center in 2008, Medical Fitness is getting ready to move into a brand new home at FMH Crestwood later this year. The move will give the program more space to offer group exercise classes and to welcome more people into the program.
If you have a condition like high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol, heart disease, diabetes, or arthritis (to name a few) and you’re hesitant about starting an exercise program on your own, FMH Medical Fitness is here to help. Our staff of registered nurses and exercise physiologists will create an exercise plan specific to your needs and monitor your progress to help you stay on track.
