Ah, the dilemma.
You stand, refrigerator open, collecting ingredients for the night’s dinner when you encounter a long-since-opened bottle of barbecue sauce. It looks okay. Smells alright. But is it safe to use? Are you sure?
How about this one: you’re cooking up a crab feast (with plenty of Old Bay, of course), how can you tell when the crabs are ready for the paper-lined table?
As they say, there’s an app for that.
The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and ConAgra Foods have teamed up to create the Is My Food Safe? app, available on both iOS and Android platforms. The app is full of answers for moments when you’re wondering (or worrying) about food safety.

Reaching into the back of the pantry for the brown sugar only to find a sweet, dark brick? Use the “Time to Toss?” tool to learn that if it’s been there more than four months you should probably run to the store:
Think you already know the answers to these food safety quandaries? Test your knowledge with the “Is My Kitchen Safe?” quiz.
Don’t miss the “More” button in the lower right corner. There you’ll find more information about food poisoning, home food safety tips and frequently asked questions.
This may not be an app that earns a spot on your home screen, or even one you use every day, but in those moments in front of the refrigerator as you wonder what’s safe and what could make you sick, it could certainly come in handy!
